Gas cost $3.37 a gallon in the spring of 2014, and the Dow Jones stood at 17,823 — a tense standoff over Ukraine dominated international headlines, as the United States and its allies suspended Russia from the G8 following the annexation of Crimea, marking the first time the group had shrunk since Russia joined in 1998. On screens and speakers, "Game of Thrones" was pulling in record viewers on HBO while Pharrell Williams held the top spot on the charts with "Happy," a song that would go on to become one of the best-selling singles of the decade. The San Antonio Spurs defeated the Miami Heat to claim the NBA championship that June, the same spring that the United Nations International Court of Justice ruled Japan's Antarctic whaling program was commercial rather than scientific and ordered it halted — a landmark decision in international environmental law.
